Dormammu Almost Looked WAY Crazier In Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE (Artwork)

Something I touched on earlier this week was how the lead character in Doctor Strange would’ve looked way too silly to audiences if the film had come out 10 years ago, but that Marvel Studios had now expanded the visual canvas enough for superhero films to make him not seem corny. Indeed, Marvel hasn’t really shied away from being unapologetically “comic book” with a lot of its designs.

One liberty they took in Doctor Strange, though, left fans craving a little bit more. Namely, the design for Dormammu in the Scott Derrickson film felt a little generic. But some new concept artwork, published by the Daily Superhero, reveals some alternate ideas they had for the cosmic villain.

See, the character has typically been depicted the way he’s pictured at the top of this post. A sort of humanoid, demonic, flaming entity. In Doctor Strange he ended up just being a disembodied face. In these newly-released bits of concept artwork by Ryan Meinerding, we see how they almost went with a merger of those two ideas: A disembodied, flaming, demonic face.

There’s almost something Ghost Rider-like about these designs. Maybe that’s why they changed him up? Considering that Ghost Rider has arrived on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season, maybe they thought twice about including another character with a flaming, demonic skull?

What do you think of these alternate designs for Dormammu in Doctor Strange?
