Dune Finds Its Baron Harkonnen In The Avengers’ Stellan Skarsgard

There’s some spicy news flowing out of Legendary’ s Dune film.  The Atreides family will have a mighty fine adversary to contend with. Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard has just stepped in to fill the boots of the villainous Baron Harkonnen. Americans probably know him most from his appearances in Marvel’s Thor films and The Avengers where he portrayed Erik Selvig.

The putrid character Baron Harkonnen was famously brought to life by actor Kenneth McMillan in David Lynch’s 1984 Dune film. Good news for fans of the Frank Herbert novel the film is based upon. The original novel won the 1966 Nebula award for Best novel and is long regarded as a classic in the literary realm.

Director Denis Villeneuve did a decent job with the film Blade Runner 2049. Currently, its Rotten Tomato score is at 89% fresh. Visually, the film popped and it was also nice to see a different side from Dave Bautista who was best known for his role as Drax in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers franchise. I am very much looking forward to keeping track of this production to see how the rest of the cast rounds up. Bring on the sandworms.

Skarsgard makes the second actor confirmed to be appearing in the film. He will be joining Guardians of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista who previously worked alongside Villeneuve on his 2017 film, Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve is putting together a stellar cast to bring Frank Herbert’s classic film to the big screen.

The script was written by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts. In addition to scripting, and directing duties, Villeneuve will produce. Alongside him are Mary Parent and Cale Boyter.
