Early Forecast Numbers For Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil Released

This upcoming October, Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil his theaters everywhere. This is the sequel to the 2014 live action re-imagination of the classic Sleeping Beauty, which focused on Maleficent’s story, who was played by Angelina Jolie, rather than Aurora, who was played by Elle Fanning. This film was a hit as it brought in over $758 million dollars worldwide on a reported $180 million budget. Now Disney will be looking for some similar magic when the sequel is released. So what do the early forecasts say?

BoxOfficePro has released the long range forecasts to Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and according to their numbers they are estimating that this film’s opening weekend could bring in between $30 and $50 million. The first film brought in a little over $69 million domestically in it’s first weekend. One of the most important things that this film has is the returning star power of Angelina Jolie considering how well received her role as Maleficent was, not to mention her upcoming Marvel role in The Eternals. Something else is that there isn’t many films between now and November’s Frozen II that aim to bring in young female audiences.

The report also mentions a few things that this film has working against it. For example, the fact that this film is being released five years since the release of the original film. As popular as the first one became, the length of time between films could have been enough time to have people lose interest in the characters. This would lead to the film to have diminished returns. This happened to the sequel to the live action Alice In Wonderland, Alice Through The Looking Glass, which dropped a whopping 77 percent from the first film’s domestic total. Another potential problem is that the animated film, The Addams Family, is being released the week before and a positive word of mouth could generate competition for the Maleficent sequel.

Along with Jolie and Fanning, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harris Dickinson with Joachim Ronning directing. Sequels usually don’t do as well as it’s predecessors even if it has the mouse’s stamp of approval. So we’ll see how these early forecast numbers hold up.
