Endgame Writers Discuss Criticism Of Thor: The Dark World Which They Also Have A Writing Credit For

The writing duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely must feel on top of the world right now. They wrote Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which many regards as the best MCU film to date and also wrote Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which you could arguably all place into the MCU top ten movies. However, they also have a writing credit on Thor: The Dark World which is regarded by some as the worst MCU movie thus far.

When The LA Times caught up with the writing duo, they asked them whether it was important for them to address that movie in Endgame, here is their response.

McFeely: No, it wasn’t important to address it, it’s just where one of the stones was. That second act [of Endgame] is going back into the other movies and finding the stones. Other than a brief moment where it would’ve been with Benicio del Toro at his Collector’s Museum, it was in Asgard during the movie. And we’d already seen Benicio del Toro in [Infinity War].

Markus: We knew we wanted each journey that the heroes took to not just be a stone journey, but also to provide some emotional resolution. Thor’s turmoil was really [eased] by getting together with his mom. And that was a very poignant moment because she dies later that day, so we could both get the stone and seek the resolution that we needed for him.

They were also asked whether they take exception to fan criticism of that movie to which Markus replied,

I think the bar is set high for Marvel. We share a credit on that movie, we came in to help out, so it’s on our résumé. Listen, there are 22 movies. One’s going to be first and one’s going to be last. I think there’s plenty of delightful things in it.

It’s interesting how we as fans ranks these 22 MCU movies so far. I personally can’t think of one single bad movie that I couldn’t enjoy watching again if it was playing. Thor: The Dark World, yeah it’s not one of my favourites, but I could watch it before The Incredible Hulk as that film just blows for me. It’s also worth remembering that Markus and McFeely were brought in to fix that movie a little, they didn’t come up with all the ideas. If they had, I’m sure the movie would have had a better villain, as that’s really the main issue with The Dark World for me.

If Thor: The Dark World is the low end of the MCU bar, then I am and will continue to be a happy fanboy. What do you think of that movie, what would you say is the worst of the MCU movies thus far? Leave your scathing criticisms in the usual spot below as always.
