Epix Orders New Series Pennyworth From Gotham Showrunner

Sad Gotham only has one more season to go? Need more Alfred in your life? Never fear, Epix is here.

THR reports that Epix, the MGM-owned premium cable network, has given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for Pennyworth. The show obviously focuses on Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s butler (and a whole lot more!).

The show is created by Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, but the series is not a Gotham spinoff. Pennyworth will be an entirely new story exploring Alfed’s origins as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work for Thomas Wayne in 1960s London.

Sean Pertwee, the actor who plays Alfred on Gotham, will not be involved. Casting has not started and the series is confirmed to be set in a completely different universe, even though it comes from Heller.

Pennyworth is obviously based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane AND Bill Finger. Heller is writing the script and will executive produce the cable program. Danny Cannon, will exec produce and direct the pilot, just as he did for Gotham.

Epix president Michael Wight had this to say about the network’s new venture:

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”

Heller and Canon added in their joint statement:

“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”
