Evangeline Lilly Would Love To See An All Female Avengers Led by Captain Marvel

Popular movies are certainly becoming more diverse and Ant-Man and the Wasp was the first Marvel movie where a female character received top billing with the male star of the movie. We also have Captain Marvel coming in March, which will be the first Marvel movie with a sole female lead.

On the promotion trail for Ant-Man and the Wasp (remember it just released a week ago in Europe), star Evangeline Lilly spoke with Pop Buzz in the UK about the future of women in Marvel movies. Lilly was asked about rumors of an all-female superhero team-up movie and whether she could see herself as the leader of that team. Here is what Lilly said.

“Well, it seems only natural Captain Marvel would lead because she is a general? And she’s the captain. And Captain America leads the other Avengers, right, so maybe Captain Marvel would lead. I’d think so.”

Whilst this neither confirms or rejects the idea of this team up movie, it appears as if Lilly seems keen on the idea. I am not too sure I agree, let me explain. For me, being more diverse and inclusive does not equate to having movies without any male leads. I think it’s great that the likes of Wasp and Captain Marvel will be joining Scarlet Witch and Black Widow in future team movies, I just don’t see an all-female team movie as being diverse or inclusive, because in fact, it’s the opposite of that.

For me, story comes first and I can’t see a really good reason for a threat to appear which only the female heroes can deal with? That doesn’t make sense in my head, but maybe I just fail to see the story potential here? For a start, I believe Captain Marvel will go on to replace Captain America is a natural leader of the full Avengers team, not just the female ones. A Black Widow movie, which is being seriously considered, great. A Wasp and Cap Marvel team up, again I’m in. However, an all-female full Avengers movie? I don’t see the need for that.

Anyhoo, it’s not about what I think, what do you fellow fans think of the idea of an all-female team movie, does the idea work for you? Sound off in the usual place below.
