Fast & Furious Actors Reportedly Have Contractual Limits On How Badly They Are Beaten Up On Screen

When you think of Fast & Furious films, chances are you think of over-the-top action scenes and high-octane stunts — usually involving cars. In more recent films, though, you may have noticed that there’s a hell of a lot more actors going fisticuffs — like The Rock, Jason Statham, and Vin Diesel. These guys go toe-to-toe on various occasions, but apparently, while all this action between them may seem random and ridiculous, there is some rhyme to the reason.

According to a post from WSJ (via Screen Crush), there’s a lot of thought that goes into these fights involving the star. In fact, “fights are choreographed to ensure that none of the leads comes out looking like a loser,” producer Michael Fottrell told the outlet.

“According to producers and crew members on the films, Mr. Statham, 51 years old, negotiated an agreement with the studio that limits how badly he can be beaten up on screen. Mr. Diesel, 52, has his younger sister, a producer on the films, police the number of punches he takes. And Mr. Johnson, 47, enlists producers, editors and fight coordinators to help make sure he always gives as good as he gets.”

This all sounds silly and ridiculous…but it all makes sense, especially for someone like The Rock, who has a carefully manicured persona he has to keep up. As was recently pointed out in Tarantino’s excellent Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, if you spend too much of your career getting used as a punching bag, pretty soon, audiences will only see you as a punching bag, even if it’s only subliminally.
