Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Trailer – The Franchise Goes Full Superhero

Holy hell. Like, holy hell. I mean, I like the Fast and Furious franchise as much as any warmblooded American (I gave The Fate of the Furious a notoriously high mark in my review), but this is a whole new level of awesome here. And honestly, I’m not really sure why this is so surprising. Both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham have balanced both action and comedy well in the past (for Statham, I can’t recommend Spy enough), so this seemed like a surefire hit.

However, this new trailer really managed to hit all the right points perfectly. More than the other Fast and Furious films, which balance an ensemble cast, this one can truly focus in on a single relationship between two badasses who simply can’t get along. And I love it. Adore it. Want to be it. And every other gross way I can possibly phrase this damn thing. Seriously, between the killer chemistry between Johnson and Statham, the Wendy Carlos-like musical cues, and absolutely hilarious character-driven action scenes, I can’t think of a better way to spend my summer.

Below is the official synopsis to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw:

“Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

“But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.”

Also, can I talk about how wonderful it is that they’re actually dealing with legit superhuman abilities in this franchise now? And the fact that Idris Elba full-on just says he’s a “bad guy” really highlights the amazing, ridiculous tone of this thing.

I’m obviously in. Are you?
