Feig Reveals Why They Rebooted ‘GHOSTBUSTERS’ Instead Of Making ‘3’

Since its inception, the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS reboot has been maligned by fans, and for a multitude of reasons. Some have complained about the cast. Others have complained about the fact that it’s a reboot and not a sequel. Even if they wanted to introduce a new cast, why couldn’t the older films be canon? Would it have killed the writers to have a passing of the torch from the original crew to the new one? These kinds of questions has dogged the production. Well, this morning the first official trailer hit the net, and director Paul Feig has been fielding questions about his film.

The topic of “Reboot v Sequel” came up in a chat between Feig and Cinema Blend, and the writer-director gave his rationale. Unfortunately, it’s nothing that’s going to silence the fans that think this could’ve been a follow-up instead of a reset:

“This is such an amazing franchise, with two amazing movies, but it could just keep going! There’s so many things you can do with it. It just seemed terrible to leave it in a box. And yet, at the same time, there’s something exciting about the idea of bringing it to a new generation, but this time… see an origin story of them. I know some people are like, ‘Why is it not a sequel instead of a reboot?’ I didn’t like the idea, personally, of them being handed technology – ‘Here’s how to do this.’ I want to see it develop!”

So that’s it. There’s no great storytelling reason for why they decided to reboot. Feig just wanted to see these characters become Ghostbusters from scratch, instead of having them inherit the roles.

As I sit here, I can come up with a half dozen ways they could’ve achieved that while still keeping the other films as canon. But whatever. It is what it is. The film is coming, and it will be entirely its own entity (even if that trailer really does make a lot of allusions to the original films).

What’d you think of his answer? Share this story on Facebook and Twitter to keep the conversation raging, as these new GHOSTBUSTERS take over the web with the new trailer today.
