Filmmaker Ava DuVernay has been hard at work throughout the last few years sitting in the director’s chair. After critically-acclaimed pieces of art like Selma and the Netflix documentary 13th, DuVernay jumped head first into writing and directing the upcoming series Central Park Five. Set to be released on Netflix in 2019, Central Park Five will tell the tale of the 1989 court case where five black/Latino male teens were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in Central Park.
Shortly before production began on Central Park Five, it was announced that DuVernay would be adapting the DC comic book series The New Gods for Warner Bros./DC in their extended universe. Not much was mentioned since then due to DuVernay’s commitment to Central Park Five, but it seems DuVernay may be ready to work on the project judging by her recent tweet.

New Gods was created in 1971 by legendary comic book writer and artist Jack Kirby during his tenure with DC Comics. The New Gods series features native beings from the planets of New Genesis and Apokolips and was a part of “Jack Kirby’s Fourth World” of comic characters. With DuVernay’s tweet of Kirby’s work, this could be a moment where she’s taking time to remind her fans and followers that she is excited about her next project… or maybe she’s already begun brainstorming on it. Keep an eye on LRM for anything new from this incredibly talented filmmaker and her complex future project.
