Freeform Orders Script To Series Commitment For Black Panther Party Dramedy from Laurence Fishburne

Platform One Media’s project Party Girls just received a script-to-series commitment from Disney. Party Girls is a dramedy inspired by the life of Elaine Brown and her daughter Ericka Suzanne. Brown was the first leader of the Black Panther political movement in the 1960s. Party Girls is being produced by Laurence Fishburne.

Party Girls will be set in 1970’s Oakland. The half-hour, single-camera dramedy will chronicle the daughter Ericka’s path through adolescence while being in a unique political environment in which her mother rises through the Black Panther Party. The series aims to answer a very personal question for the main character who is going through a rebellious adolescence while her mom leads a political-cultural rebellion.

From the press release:

“From Platform One Media, headed by CEO Katie O’Connell Marsh, Party Girls will be executive produced by Elisa Ellis of Platform One Media (Narcos), Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions (grown-ishblack-ish), and Lance Krall and Peter Siaggas of Picture It Productions, with Dayna Lynne North (Insecure) set to write the pilot script and serve as executive producer/showrunner, should it go to series.”

The series will take place a few years after the founding of the party by political activists Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Originally aiming to teach self-defense, an unintentional byproduct was the notorious Crips gang in LA. Because the series will take place during the 70’s there is little likelihood that the series will explore the gang.

The series will be scripted by Dayna Lynne North. She will also serve as showrunner while executive producing with Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy.
