From One Joker Director to Another: Ayer Thinks Phillips And Phoenix Will Crush It

I have been a fan of David Ayer ever since the credits rolled on Antoine Fuqua’s 2001 film Training Day. Sitting their mouth slack open in awe at how visceral of an experience this film starring Denzel Washington was. Whoever wrote this nailed Alonzo’s character. The writing. The lines. Epic. David Ayer wrote the script. I have friends today that will jump at the opportune moment to shout “King Kong ain’t got s*** on me!” Classic. Hell, Denzel earned himself an Oscar for the way he chewed through scenery with impunity.

Ayer has celluloid pumping through his blood. Just a couple of years ago, Ayer’s DC project Suicide Squad started dropping some very exciting trailers. How could we not have been excited about Requiem For A Dream’s Jared Leto running around in this new manic gangster reinvention of the classic Joker character? Suicide Squad has its fair share of problems, but it also has some great moments. However, it also feels like there was an entire Joker film somewhere dead on the cutting room floor. Why did it get cut? Maybe it was studio interference or too long of a runtime. We may never know. What we do know is that Ayer has an opinion on Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker in the upcoming film by Todd Phillips from Hangover fame.

While not much has been divulged about the story, we do know Phoenix will be backed up by actors Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Frances Conroy.

What do you folks think? Will Phoenix’s Joker carry the torch forward in a role played by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto?
