Game Of Thrones Cast Remembers Early Days On Set In New Featurette

It doesn’t feel like too long ago that Game of Thrones was first being touted as the next big project from HBO. I was working at Barnes and Noble at the time, and I remember the series editions we started getting in the bookstore. I hadn’t read them at that point, but I remember being a bit nervous at the prospect of another fantasy TV series. Historically, networks really hadn’t done the genre justice. The last one I remember liking was that Merlin miniseries from the ’90s starring Sam Neill, but I’m pretty sure that was terrible and I was just young.

Would HBO actually be able to give a series of novels its due on the big screen? Could they capture the scope of a legit epic fantasy series? Even watching that first season, it’s clear they’re stretching themselves. It doesn’t quite feel much like an epic fantasy as much as a series of slightly related scenes. The sets are modest, and apart from some establishing shots, it feels very much like we’re moving from one set to another, rather than living in a thriving world.

But, of course, things have changed drastically since then, and with each passing season, the budgets have ballooned quite nicely, making Westeros even more and more real with each passing episode. And very soon, it’ll all be coming to an end in the upcoming final season. So why not take a moment to remember those early days?

In a new featurette, the cast of the show does just that. But be careful, because there are spoilers from recent seasons scattered about. If you’re not caught up, watch at your own peril.
