Game Of Thrones is far from over, and even though we have a short season this year, season 8’s six episode length may not be set in stone. As soon as it was revealed that season 7 and season 8 would be shorter in length, many fans sighed and kicked up grass, much like Rocket Racoon did in Guardians Of The Galaxy. But fear not my friends, this could change. In an interview with EW, HBO programming president Casey Bloys informed the public that season 8 may give us a little more.

“They’re still figuring out the shape of the season, what they want to do, I’ll take as many as they want to do. If they give me eight, I’ll want 10. But it’s really up to them. They’ll let me know.”

He also further commented on something we have been wondering, “Will GoT be over after season 8 or will there be a spin-off or a sequel?” Well, perhaps it won’t be a sequel but something that could be even better; A prequel. Bloys commented on exploring that possibility.

“It’s such a big property we would be foolish not to explore it, but it’s a pretty high bar. We’ll take some shots at it. I’m not going to do it just to do it. It has to feel very special. I would rather have no sequel and leave it as-is then have something we rushed out.”

He furthered his thoughts with this:

“A prequel feels like it has less pressure on it [than a spin-off], [Author George R.R. Martin’s history of Westeros] gives you areas in which to say to a writer, ‘If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,’ and we’ll see what comes back. But I don’t feel any pressure that we have to have something.”

A prequel seems perfect to me, as opposed to a sequel and yes, it is mainly due to the lore that George R. R. Martin created for us in anthologies, collections, and the main novels as well. In the flashback episodes from Bran Stark’s visions in season six we got to focus on Robert’s Rebellion, and we finally learned that R+L=J was true, of which John Snow’s parents were Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, technically making John Snow a rightful heir to The Iron Throne. (Not to mention his relationship with Dany) But, could a prequel focus on this same story arc? Doubtful. I think a fascinating prequel would involve the Targaryen war of succession, known as The Dance of the Dragons. The conflict accounts the civil war between Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra over their father’s throne. I could actually see another 4 seasons spin out of this, but for the next two years at least we will have to speculate until the sad day when GoT ends.

Would you like to see The Dance of the Dragons be made into a prequel? Are you disappointed that season 7 and 8 are currently shorter seasons? Let’s hear from ya!
