As the Game of Thrones fanbase suffers through 2018 in the wait for the show’s final season, word comes from George R.R. Martin that a new book for the franchise will be released his year. Unfortunately for book readers, it will not be the long overdue The Winds of Winter, but the first volume of Fire & Blood.
Fire & Blood will chronicle the history of House Targaryen. Martin had this to say about the upcoming novel:
“Yes, most of Fire & Blood consists of the ‘sidebars’ I originally wrote for The World of Ice & Fire. Abridged versions of some of those pieces appeared as The Princess and the Queen, The Rogue Prince, and The Sons of the Dragon, but these are the full versions, together with some chapters that have never appeared anywhere.”

Readers of A Song of Ice and Fire know very well that with their beloved books, comes a wait. Martin began writing the series in 1991, and the first installment, A Game of Thrones wasn’t published until 1996. The series is prone to delays. Fans of the books anxiously await The Winds of Winter, however, the companion novel, Fire & Blood, should do enough to hold them over until Winds of Winter is finally released.
