Game Of Thrones Showrunners Benioff And Weiss Sign Mega Deal With Netflix

David Benioff and Dan Weiss the showrunners of the now ended TV blockbuster Game of Thrones have agreed to a mega deal with Netflix to write, direct and produce TV shows and movies for the streaming giant. Benioff and Weiss, known to Game of Thrones fans as D&D have been courted by various big studios and were thought at one point to be poised to sign up with Amazon Prime after spending years with HBO. However, Netflix have stepped up and snatched the pair for their own platform instead.

Rumor is that Benioff and Weiss were looking for something in the region of $200 Million from one of the big streaming giants and Netflix seem to be the ones that have stumped up the finances required. In a press statement from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos he said,

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

Benioff and Weiss then released a joint statement in regards to the deal.

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ’80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

We have no real idea what kind of projects the pair have planned for Netflix, but it may take some time as they are currently putting together the next Star Wars trilogy for Disney. Will Benioff and Weiss continue to work on developing new projects for Netflix while they are still in the weeds of making three Star Wars movies across the next six years? Who knows, but it does seem like they are only producing/writing these Star Wars movies and we have heard no word about directing, so far anyway.

Interestingly from an industry stand point Benioff and Weiss’ stock couldn’t be higher right now with Game of Thrones final season earning a bucket load of Emmy nominations. However, their stock with fans of the show is probably lower than it ever has been after some serious fan backlash over that, rather rushed, and disappointing finale to Game of Thrones. It will be interesting to see what the pair pull off next and whether their success on Game of Thrones was really mostly due to George R.R. Martin, author of the books Game of Thrones was based on.

What do you think of this deal with Netflix, are you excited to see what Benioff and Weiss do next, or are you still thinking about David Benioff telling viewers that “Dany Kinda forgot” about Euron Greyjoy’s Iron Fleet and shaking your head?
