There is a whole lot of pressure that goes into playing any superhero character. If you’re committing to portraying such a character on the silver screen, you are essentially carrying the hopes and dreams of millions of fans around the world, and how you play said character could truly make or break the spirits of these fans. And among all the superhero Titans, few stand alongside the likes of Batman.

When Ben Affleck first signed on to play the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman, the internet was in an uproar. Sure, this guy had directed a Best Picture-winning film just recently, but decades-long impressions die hard. I’m sure it wasn’t a decision that was made out of hand, and apparently, one other Batman alum actually spoke to Affleck about the role: George Clooney. Clooney himself revealed this on THR‘s Awards Chatter podcast.

“I actually did talk to him about it. I said, ‘Don’t do it. It was only from my experience, which is, you know… In a way, we had very similar careers, highs and lows, ups and downs, and that’s good, you know. No one’s trajectory is a straight line up. He had worked his way back from actor jail, which happens when I do Batman & Robin and he does Gigli, so it’s that, he gets to that moment, and I think, ‘Don’t do something they can fire back off at you.’ He did great, though.”

Of course, Clooney played Bruce Wayne and Batman in the infamously horrible Batman and Robin, a film that has since gone on to be celebrated for its awfulness, so it’s easy to see why he would feel that way about the role.

I will agree with Clooney, though. Affleck did do a fantastic job in the role, and even if Batman v Superman wasn’t everything fans hoped it would be, Affleck himself was an oft-mentioned silver lining to the movie as a whole. That being said, it does seem clear in retrospect that, from a career standpoint, it didn’t really do him any favors, which is unfortunate.
