Game of Thrones is on its way out of HBO. Once Season 8 hits the cable network next year, it’ll be all she wrote for those groups of characters. Sure, author George R.R. Martin is hard at work developing prequels for the network, but even he isn’t putting all his dragon eggs in the Westeros basket.
As was reported around this time last year, he is also working on a project called Who Fears Death. The post-apocalyptic drama is based on a novel of the same name from author Nnedi Okarafor and is one of many that Martin has attached himself to. Speaking with Variety on the red carpet, Martin made it clear that he has high hopes for the show:
“Nnedi are working on a book together. She wrote an amazing book called Who Fears Death that HBO has optioned, so I’m an executive producer on that, and we’re developing that to be, I hope, one of the next big HBO fantasy series.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the book, you’re not alone. In its original report, Deadline describes the novel as follows:
“Who Fears Death tells the coming of age tale of Onyesowu in post-apocalyptic North Africa where her story makes her an outcast. She must go on a journey from self-reproach to love, but to do so she’ll have to overcome untold obstacles—defeating her hated sorcerer father and becoming the instrument of prophetic deliverance for a land of oppressed people, all the while fighting to master the terrifying powers growing inside her.”
While Game of Thrones, as well as any spin-off series, are all well and good, I think it is very important that they continue to mine other books for series so that things don’t get stagnant.
