George R.R. Martin Talks About The Differences Between The Stark Sisters

While the Stark sisters have had been dragged through most every s**t pile Westeros has to offer, they both came out the other side smarter, tougher, and became formidable adversaries for anyone who would oppose them. Considering where they both were when their father Ned had his dome lopped off, it’s amazing their both still alive.

Their tactics are vastly different, with Arya becoming no one, and becoming very good at sticking enemies with the pointy end of her sword Needle, she’s one of the most deadly characters on the show. Her sisters Sansa, has survived the most bleek of situations, and has never lifted a sword. Sansa played close attention during her time in King’s Landing, and learned how to, “play the game”

Author of the series of novels Game of Thrones is based on, George R.R. Martin recently spoke with Rolling Stone

“This is also the era where courtly romance was born: the gallant Knight, the fair lady, the princess, all of that stuff. That became very big, initially in the courts of France and Burgundy, but it spread all over Europe, including England and Germany. And it still has its roots in a lot of stuff that we follow today. I mean, in some sense the Disney Princess archetype — the whole princess mythos — that we’re all familiar with is a legacy of the troubadours of the romance era of medieval France.”

Martin goes on to describe the core differences between the sisters.

“Sansa completely bought into that, loved everything about that. She dreamed of jousts, bards singing of her beauty, fair knights, being the mistress of a castle and perhaps a princess and queen. The whole romantic thing.”

Yes, Season 1 Sansa was all about becoming a queen to Joffrey, and as Martin talks about below, Arya was the complete opposite, having no interest in the activities that girls traditional participated in.

“And then to have Arya, a girl who did not fit that — and who, from the very beginning, was uncomfortable and chafes at the roles that she was being pushed into. You know, who didn’t wanna sew but wanted to fight with a sword, who liked riding and hunting and wrestling in the mud. A “tomboy” we would call it, I guess. But that phrase, of course, didn’t exist in the Middle Ages, so I don’t think I ever use it in the books, but you know what I mean.”

In Season 7, the siblings teamed to take down one of the sneakiest and most clever men in Westeros, Littlefinger, who always seemed to be a step ahead of most everyone, however, he underestimated Sansa, and that turned out to be a fatal mistake for him. The two have more than proven themselves are survivors as well as people to be feared. Sansa can outthink most people, and Arya has a bag of actual faces to disguise herself with.

Though their biggest challenge, frankly everyone’s biggest challenge, is just outside Winterfell, and it’s unlike anything anyone at Winterfell has faced before (excluding a handful of people, Jon, The Hound, Tormund etc…).
