George R.R. Martin’s Somewhat Unusual Idea For A Game Of Thrones Spinoff

As most of you may know HBO is moving forward with the Game of Thrones prequel which recently had its title revealed as The Long Night. Now, creator of the series, George R.R. Martin, has another idea for a spinoff, and the idea is somewhat unusual.

While speaking with The New York Times, Martin revealed his idea for a show that would focus on the common folk of Westeros, it would be set during the era of Game of Thrones, but wouldn’t follow any of the now famous characters we have all grown to love, or hate, or both. You can check out what Martin had to say below.

“Hamlet is going on in the background, but it’s all about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I wanted to do a show called Spear Carrierswhich would actually be set during the events of Game of Thrones, but it wouldn’t be following Dany, Tyrion and Jaime. They would all be there in the background like Hamlet.”

Martin continued:

“It would be more like, ‘Here’s a story about a guy in the City Watch; here’s a story about a prostitute at one of Littlefinger’s brothels; here’s a story about a mummer who’s in town to do juggling and tricks.’ And they all get caught up in the events. I think that kind of show would be a lot of fun to do.”

Well, that’s an interesting idea. As I understand it, the show would sort of be an anthology that intertwines the stories at one point or another. While I think there are better ideas for spinoffs, I wouldn’t have an issue if HBO moved forward with this, I would definitely give it a shot. While talk about Game of Thrones spinoffs is always fun, we must remember we’re just a few short months away from the sure to be epic final season of the show that started it all.
