Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Won’t Pull Any Punches Says Director

I’ll admit, I wasn’t one of the many people out there who loved the 2014 Godzilla reboot. To me, that film took way too damn long for us to the Godzilla goodness, and all the stuff leading up to it was packed too full of Generic Soldier A for me to care about anything going on. That being said, I still enjoyed the character of Godzilla in the movie, and when Kong: Skull Island hit, I was sold on the future of the universe.

Of course, I also can’t understate how much the two new trailers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters really helped out. Unlike that first film, this one seems to be going all in on the whole Kaiju deal, and better resembles what I wanted the old Godzilla films to actually be like when I was a kid. But a part of me was still concerned I’d be fooled again. For all we know, it could be more of the filmmakers building up for one and a half hours before giving us the action and monsters we actually want.

Director Michael Dougherty assures us that isn’t the case. Speaking with Total Film (via Bloody Disgusting), Dougherty kind of guaranteed to bring the goods:

“We have a lot of monsters. I think Gareth [Edwards] had a lot of fun playing cat-and-mouse and I love the slow-build he created. But we definitely take the gloves off for this film. No holding back.”

Given that the trailer alone reveals King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Godzilla, this isn’t exactly a huge surprise, but I’m happy this doesn’t appear to be a case where they are just packing in all the monstery parts to sell some tickets. They know we want monsters and they seem intent on delivering.

I’ll take it!
