We may be a few weeks out from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but it’s about that time the experts started weighing in on how much the movie will be taking in in its opening weekend. According to a new report from THR, it will be taking in a respectable $50 million in its opening weekend, according to early tracking for the film.
For reference, the first film in the MonsterVerse back in 2014 (Godzilla) grossed $93.2 million in its opening weekend, while Kong: Skull Island took in $61 million. Assuming this projection is correct, that puts it squarely in at the bottom of the pack in terms of its opener. Given how Legendary and Warner Bros. are no doubt hoping to make with this franchise, it does seem like a letdown.

That being said, even the outlet states that this accounts only for current projections, which don’t really take into account the inevitable marketing push the movie will bring to the table as the film gets closer to its release. Ultimately, I think it’ll depend greatly on how good the movie is. If it is a solid action romp, I imagine we’ll get something that performs closer in the $65 million range.
Of course, all that being said, while Kong: Skull Island didn’t do nearly as well domestically as Godzilla, the overseas market proved to be fruitful, so as long as those numbers do well, it really won’t matter what many of us in North America think.
