Variety is reporting that Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day writer Rob Lieber has been tapped to pen the screenplay for Goosebumps 2. However, it doesn’t sound like his is the only treatment circulating the Sony lot.
It present, it is believed that his treatment, interestingly enough, has no role for Jack Black’s character, R.L. Stine, who was one of the main supporting roles in the first Goosebumps film. Don’t count him out yet, though, as Black could still join the project should his schedule allow it.
The outlet also noted that Black is believed to have a salary of ranging from $6 million to $8 million, and if the actor was unable to join, it would free up their budget a bit more. While this may not be a make-or-break deal, it’s worth noting that the first one was only a modest hit, costing $58 million to make, and grossing $150.2 million worldwide. Taking into account all the marketing costs and theater cut, it’s just enough to make a profit, so it wasn’t exactly laughing all the way to the bank.
As mentioned above, there are other scripts in consideration, and some do have Black’s character, and are also based on other books in the series. All in all, it sounds like they’re still throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks.
