Greener Grass Review: A Movie For Those With An Out-There Sense Of Humor

Greener Grass is the story of two affluent suburban moms, Jill and Lisa, and their rivalry with each other. While they are good friends, they do experience plenty of jealousy if one’s child does better at a recital or makes it into an advanced math class. What sounds like a typical suburban story is distinguished by off the wall humor though, and that’s what makes Greener Grass so unique and special.

The suburbia Jill and Lisa live in is a pastel wonderland. On the surface, it looks like the perfect community but then you notice the little weird details, like the fact that all of the adults have braces. At a soccer game, Jill gives her newborn baby away to Lisa for no explicable reason. That no one thinks anything of it is part of the film’s oddball charm. People do that sort of thing here. Jill’s son falls into a pool at his dad’s birthday party and comes out of the water a dog, and Lisa puts a soccer ball under her dress and everyone suddenly believes she is pregnant. That’s the kind of weirdness we’re dealing with here and it is all quite odd and funny.

The crux of the story is Jill’s life falling apart. After giving away her baby, everything goes downhill for her. She slowly but surely loses everything, and we wonder if her mind will be next. This sounds kind of dark, but everything, though it’s played straight, leads to laughs, especially of the awkward, uncomfortable variety.

Writer-director-stars Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe have crafted quite a unique film with this, their feature directorial debut. It’s hard to find comparisons for its humor, but at times, it does remind one of some of the weirder bits of Wet Hot American Summer. And those weirder bits are my personal favorite parts of that movie! DeBoer and Luebbe have made an ever so original comedy, and through and through, it is infused with an out there sense of humor that could be considered divisive but struck this viewer right in the funny bone.

Greener Grass is out now in theaters in select cities. You can also find it On Demand, and it’s worth checking out for a positively unique comedy experience that I don’t think will be replicated by another movie anytime soon.
