Guillermo Del Toro Making Werewolf-Western With Tigers Are Not Afraid Helmer

Filmmaker Issa López is about to have her big Hollywood coming out party with the movie Tigers Are Not Afraid. The horror-fairy tale-esque picture hitting American screens this year nearly two years after it premiered at Fantastic Fest way back in 2017. It’s been a long road, but it seemed destined to lead to interesting places, especially since producer Guillermo del Toro is such a fan of strange genre tales.

So, it’s almost no surprise that he’d be assisting López in her next big venture, which she describes as a werewolf-Western. You read that right. A werewolf-Western, as she revealed to EW in a recent interview.

“Yes, I have a movie with Guillermo del Toro, who not only became a champion of that movie but said, ‘What are you going to do next? Let’s do something!’ I could not believe that. So, we’re prepping a werewolf movie, a supernatural Western. It’s a werewolf-Western! I’m super excited. He has the script, I wrote it, he loves it, and we’re gearing up to make it. The thing is, there’s not really that many brilliant, brilliant werewolf movies. An American Werewolf in London is the big one. I think it’s time to revisit. It’s about revisiting the essence of what it is, which is trying to contain the beast in you. It’s as simple as that, and I think that’s perfectly relatable with humankind, and particularly the moment that we’re living in.”

She has a point. Vampires have had more than their fair share in the spotlight, but as far as werewolves go, perhaps the next best thing is Wolfman — and note even that recent one with Benicio del Toro, God help us. I suppose it’s about time they’ve had their time in the spotlight.

However, more than anything, I’m excited to see some more weird west on the big screen, with our last mainstream helping being Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens. What do you think of Hollywood finally revisiting that genre? Let us know your thoughts down below!
