Halo TV Series Still In Search Of A Director

While Halo did seem to hit a speed bump last month, the franchise has also seen plenty of worse times in terms of adaptation. Over the course of the past couple decades, it’s somehow managed to be constantly in development, and yet here we are with exactly zero high-profile films or series under our belts (and before you say anything, no I don’t count those web series episodes).

It did seem to be getting some real momentum over at Showtime, but early last month, it was revealed that director and executive producer Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) would be stepping down as helmer for the project. The reason given was scheduling conflicts. As far as we know, the actual scripts and stuff do seem to be in order, but I guess Wyatt was more interested in something else…?

Well, it’s been roughly a month since then, and one would hope they’ve made some progress. In the Community Update of 2018, 343 Industries gave us a bit of an update on where things stood. The following was written by Kiki Wolfkill, studio head of Transmedia:

“It’s been a year of momentum and energy and a few roadbumps along the way but we are ending the year on the Halo TV series happily exhausted. Not unlike game development, it has been a very rapid pace over the last few months of script refinement, concepting, and practical prototyping (but unlike game development, much of this is physical prototyping which is a whole other thrill)! There have been short flights, long flights (ask Frank about his unobtainium flight status), skype calls, and working sessions all of which have left us excited to come back in January and continue to build our foundation for this show. In the meantime, we’re knee-deep in director conversations and will share deets when we’re back! Happy Halo Holiday vibes to you all!”

Those were a lot of words, but the key aspect we’re going to focus on is “knee-deep in director talks.” This means Wolfkill was (you guessed it) talking with directors about filling the position Wyatt left. At least that’s what it COULD mean. Wyatt wasn’t just a director. He was an executive producer — a key role in a TV series. As you may know, directors are usually more hands for hire than they are in film, and the way this is phrased in the paragraph above, it’s hard to tell if Wolfkill genuinely means “director” in the TV sense, or if she means EP and director.

If it’s the former, then this could mean they have already locked down an EP and are hard at work looking for other talent. If it’s the latter, then it seems like they’re still working hard to regain momentum. We have reached out to Wolfkill for clarification on the matter and will update accordingly, if necessary.

Which do you think it is? Let us know your thoughts down below!
