Happy Death Day 2U Director Has An Idea For Another Sequel

At this point, I still haven’t seen Happy Death Day 2U. The film is so far skewing Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but I honestly don’t really know what the movie can do with the mythology it set up without kind of breaking it at its core. It’s odd to say, but I feel just the slightest bit protective and concerned that’s exactly what will happen with this new sequel.

Though while I’m still dwelling on the sequel set to hit theaters tomorrow, director Christopher Landon already has his eyes set on a threequel, Happy Death Day: Tokyo Drift. Okay, that’s not what it would be called, but the man does have an idea for it, as he revealed to Cinema Blend:

“I do have the idea for the third one. And I really hope that people go see this one so that I can make it. Because it’s bonkers. … This one’s more bonkers. But it fits!”

On the note of sequels, the outlet went on to state that Happy Death Day 2U worked because it wasn’t a rehash of the first one and didn’t simply go “bigger and badder,” but actually changed things in a fundamental way. It’s this idea that producer Jason Blum feels is important for keeping things fresh, and that would continue for a third sequel, should they get one:

“This is the best example of how to make a successful sequel, you have to feel the DNA of the first movie, but it can’t feel like a repeat. … I was really passionate about this, because of what you’re saying. Because, in a franchise, to have two different genres – maybe we’ll get a third genre in the third movie? And that really hasn’t happened before.”

Though the film has yet to hit theaters, I feel pretty confident that, given its $9 million budget, that it is set to make plenty of money. Even if it doesn’t approach the $125 million of the first one, it’ll likely make plenty to justify a sequel. But will you want one? Let us know if you plan on at least seeing Happy Death Day 2U this weekend on the big screen!
