One of HBO’s popular properties from the past is coming back in cinematic form. The HBO series Deadwood has been approved to return as a movie for the network. The announcement came from HBO programming president Casey Bloys while attending the TCA summer tour on Wednesday.
“All of these people worked hard to get this together,” Bloys said. “It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all the cast members’ schedules together, but we are there. It is greenlit.” Just last year, Bloys had received a script from series creator David Milch and had nothing but good things to say about it:
“I wanted a script that would stand on its own … I’m happy to say that David totally delivered on that. It’s a terrific script.”
Deadwood ran for 3 seasons and 36 episodes up until 2006. Critics regard Deadwood as one of the best shows HBO created and one of the best shows of all time. The series earned 28 Emmy nominations, winning 8 of them. The series told the story of Deadwood, South Dakota and its evolution from camp to town in the 1870s and the many characters that resided in it. It starred Ian McShane (American Gods), Timothy Olyphant (Santa Clarita Diet), Molly Parker (Lost In Space) and John Hawkes (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
Bloys said the current schedule is to begin filming in October and air the film in Spring of 2019, but that timetable is not set in stone.
