It’s been three years since the last season of HBO’s True Detective. After scoring rave reviews with its first season, which featured Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives trying to solve a murder case over a span of time, the second season faltered a bit. While the latter season featured intense dramatic performances by Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, the story itself didn’t seem to keep the same hold on the audience as the first season.
Personally, the opening theme for the first season is better than the second season as well, but that’s just me.
Now, after releasing a teaser trailer earlier this year, HBO has released images for the upcoming third season, which will star Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff. Ali plays Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas who is in, as HBO’s press release puts it, a “story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto and director Cary Fukunaga look to be recreating the magic of the first season with a story that develops over a number of years. With a current star like Ali and veterans like Ejogo and Dorff, the season will definitely feature on-screen talent. As for the story arch, fans will have to wait and see if the series can rope them in the way it did in its first outing.
Season three of True Detective premieres Sunday, January 13th on HBO.
