It has been twenty years since the murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee in Baltimore. Within a year, her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed arrested charged and convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Since then, Syed has professed his innocence, seeking multiple appeals to his sentence. The entire country learned of Lee and Syed in 2014 with the debut of the podcast Serial.
Now, five years later, HBO has tackled the case with their new documentary series The Case Against Adnan Syed. Directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg (Deliver Is From Evil), the four-part series covers the history of the case and presents new details as new eyes on the case could benefit Syed.

The first episode plays as both an introduction to the case for newcomers and as a refresher for those who followed it on Serial. A strong focus is placed building up to the murder through Lee’s diary, and the experience of friends and family of both Lee and Syed before and after Lee’s disappearance. Additionally, the episode features the steps the film crew took in investigating aspects of the case that were glossed over in the initial case against Syed. From there, the series will begin to document Syed’s latest appeal for a new trial.
The series is gripping from the very beginning and falls perfectly in line where Serial left off. It is a true crime investigation that shines a light on how the murder and case affected all parties involved, especially the families of Lee and Syed. Fans of the podcast and newcomers to the case will definitely be glued to every second of HBO’s latest docuseries.
The Case Against Adnan Syed airs Sunday nights on HBO and is streaming on both HBO Go and HBO Now.
