His Dark Materials: HBO To Co-Produce And Distribute Fantasy Series From BBC

His Dark Materials, the BBC adaptation of the fantasy novel trilogy of the same name by author Philip Pullman, seems to be gaining some momentum. Sure, the first season of the show is already deep into production, but on Tuesday of this week, it was announced that it would be getting a second season, and today, Deadline is reporting that HBO is hopping on board to help out.

The outlet states that the network will be co-producing along with BBC, Bad Wolf, and New Line Cinema to realize the story for the small screen. Additionally, they have acquired distribution of the show outside of the U.S.

His Dark Materials is made up of the fantasy children’s books The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. It follows Lyra Belacqua as she fights against a tyrannical religious organization. An adaptation of the first novel was made back in 2007 called The Golden Compass, but ultimately, it failed to make a big enough splash at the box-office to warrant a sequel.

HBO jumping on board is good news for me, as I already indulge in the world of HBO through HBO Now, but given what happened with the British series Strike (or C.B. Strike in the States), I have concerns about them distributing the show on Cinemax instead of HBO proper.
