His Dark Materials Lands A Second Season

It’s been over 10 years since New Line Cinema stepped up to the plate and whiffed in trying to adapt His Dark Materials to the big screen. The resulting film was The Golden Compass — a wonderfully-cast movie that crumbled due to studio meddling. Rather than having faith in the story they were trying to tell, they castrated its overall message, shuffled its second and third act set pieces, and cut out the last 15 minutes because they were too much of a downer (they’d hoped to start off the next film with those scenes, but obviously that never happened).

Now, BBC is taking another crack at the property all these years later. So far, they seem to have a solid cast in-hand, with Logan‘s Dafne Keen taking the lead role as Lyra, James McAvoy playing Lord Asriel, and Lin-Manuel Miranda playing the warmhearted aeronaut Lee Scoresby. But, as I was with the original film, I couldn’t help but be a bit worried that its first run of eight-episodes would be its last, and again, we’d have only seen that first book adapted for the screen.

Well, I’m happy to report that, if you’ve had similar concerns, consider them assuaged. Empire is reporting that another run of eight episodes has been commissioned by BBC, who seem to be riding high on what they’ve seen so far from the first season. This announcement comes ahead of said first season even finishing its production, as filming is still taking place in Wales.

Jack Thorne has adapted the trilogy of books, so I can only assume that means that the next eight episodes have already been written and are ready to go. I also consider this a confirmation that those first eight episodes only cover that first book, meaning that we will likely see a complete, three-season run, unless they opt to stretch out that final, longer book.
