Hobbs And Shaw: Idris Elba In Talks To Play Villain In Fast And Furious Spin-Off

If you’re going to be taking on the likes of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in a movie, you have to be a special kind of badass. Not just anyone can believably take on these beefcakes, so it is absolutely crucial that this villain have a certain gravitas of his or her own. Luckily, it sounds like Universal already has the right idea, as according to Variety, they are currently in negotiations with Idris Elba to take on the villain role in the Fast and Furious spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw.

While Elba plays plenty heroes in his movies, he also has a tendency to skew bad. Perhaps most notably, he played Shere Khan in The Jungle Book and Krall in Star Trek Beyond. The dude plays a good goodie, but his ability to take on a more villainous approach is pretty solid too, and I think in this franchise, having him in that sort of role is a pretty solid fit. Sadly, there is no word on actual specifics regarding the flick.

Obviously, Elba will be joining Johnson and Statham, and he’ll also be joining Vanessa Kirby, who is playing Jason Statham’s sister. On board to direct is John Wick and Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch, who will be helming from a script from longtime franchise architect Chris Morgan.

Production on Hobbs and Shaw is set to begin this fall.
