Hobbs And Shaw: Jason Statham Thinks Fast And Furious Spin-Off Will Be ‘Gritty’ And ‘Real’

I love me some Fast and Furious movies, but they are some goofy-ass movies. This is a franchise that started off as some sort of undercover cop/street racing series and eventually turned into an over-the-top spy action franchise, where our heroes basically use cars for every little thing. And that’s part of the fun. The films know what they are and make no apologies for it. But what about the upcoming Hobbs and Shaw spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham? Just what kind of tone can we expect from them?

In the past, we heard word that it would retain a lot of what makes those Fast and Furious movies tick, and given that long-time franchise writer Chris Morgan is working as the scribe on the spin-off as well, we have no reason to doubt that…but will it bring anything new? In a recent interview with Collider, Statham gave some insight into what he thinks the film will be like:

“I think [director] Dave Leitch’s taste is a little more grounded and a little darker. If you see Atomic Blonde, and it is just superb, his taste is definitely in a world that is sort of how you described it. I think he’s looking to do something that doesn’t look exactly like a Fast movie. Although it’s the Fast characters, he’s trying to do his own thing with it and give it a real sense of credibility. I think Dave is going to get this one gritty, and real, and f**king hardcore.”

While Statham’s Deckard Shaw is a pretty hard-boiled character in the Fast films, we did see a few chinks in the armor — namely, when we met his mother, played by Helen Mirren. The scene was largely played for laughs, and while Mirren is set to return, Statham ensures us that it won’t’ be played the same way in Hobbs and Shaw:

“We’re trying to do something that isn’t so goofy though. I know the last time she slapped me around the face and we got this little … We don’t want to take it too seriously. I’m not the director so I’m not the one controlling the tone of the movie but we want to have some meaningful stuff in it as well as the fun. At the end of the day we want to have the laughs. We want to tear each other apart. We want to enjoy it. This has to be a ride. I guess you’ve got to have the whole package.”

Personally, I think this is a great move. As mentioned above, I love me some Fast and Furious movies, but if you’re doing a spin-off, it’s probably best that you at least try to carve your own identity. If Statham’s statements are to be believed, it sounds like that’s what they’re doing.

But how do you feel about this? Do you want Hobbs and Shaw to be grittier and more real? Let us know down below!
