Hobbs & Shaw Takes In $181M Globally In Opening Weekend

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is out in theaters right now, solidifying the franchise as one that has room to grow outside of its core cast. Following Fate of the Furious’ behind-the-scenes drama between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, Johnson took Jason Statham with him and made his own big-budget extravaganza, and while I personally could not stand the film, it’s clear many other people adore the movie.

Hobbs & Shaw has held up to critical scrutiny, showing up as “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, an A- CinemaScore, and a 90% verified audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on nearly 9,000 verified reviews. But, of course, the big question is how it did financially.

Domestically, the film made $60.9 million in its opening weekend. This lands it well above the original The Fast and the Furious, which took in $40.1 million in its opening weekend. This is to be expected, as spin-offs rarely get the same fanfare as core franchises (at least at first), but this marks one of the better openings for Johnson.

Overseas, the film opened to $120 million. This doesn’t sound like a lot, but this franchise tends to hit big in China and South Korea, and it doesn’t launch there until later this month. So there’s still a chance this one pulls solid numbers.

All in all, I’d say this movie is doing serviceable, though not amazingly, given how fantastic the trailers were. But if word of mouth continues, I can see this as a film that performs based on sheer consistency.

Did you have a chance to see the film? If so, how much do you think this one will make in its whole run? Let us know down below!
