The upcoming Aladdin film will have some big shoes to fill, that’s for sure. Like all the other animated films in their catalog, Aladdin is a damn classic, and one big reason is due to the catchy and memorable songs spread throughout its runtime. Between songs like “A Friend Like Me,” “Arabian Nights,” and “A Whole New World,” it’s hard not to hold them up on a pedestal.
In the latest trailer for the film, we had a solid taste of two of these songs, and to be honest…they seemed pretty darn similar to the originals. So is this going to be the case with all of the songs in the film? Director Guy Ritchie had a chance to speak with EW regarding this very subject. Here’s what he had to say.
“Clearly people are very attached to the original songs and clearly that’s part of the DNA, so we didn’t really want to stray from the original stuff, just an embellishment with a couple of new tracks.”

That’s probably a smart approach for all those nostalgia fiends out there, but I hope it didn’t inhibit them too much for making this movie an experience in and of itself. When all said and done, I want it to actually feel more than just a shell of the original…but that’s a tall order for any movie.
