How Bad Times At The El Royale Is like A Play According to Jon Hamm And Cailee Spaeny

Film is definitely a mixture of a couple different mediums. It’s not just a visual medium, it also has different aspects of other arts like music, acting, photography, and the like. With the exception of maybe video game, it is pretty much the biggest collaboration of the arts out there. But that’s not to say that each film leans into the different arts in the same way.

If you look at films like A Quiet Place, some lean heavily into the purity of film, while films shot from an Aaron Sorkin script feel more like plays with their fast-paced dialogue. The upcoming Bat Times at the El Royale seems to be a wonderful mix that feels as much like a play at time as it does a film. Speaking to our own Gig Patta, who brought up the long takes used in the film, actors Jon Hamm and Caileen Spaeny discussed how intricate those takes were, and how it contributed to a play-like feeling.

Spaeny: We keep describing it as…it felt like a play.

Hamm: It felt like a mini-play. And you rehearse it and rehearse it and rehearse it for a whole day on the weekend. Just everybody getting everything right. From the lighting guys, to the camera guys, to the grip guys, who had to like put up black sheets to make sure nothing reflected the wrong thing, and moving those at the right times.

Spaeny: And sound cues.

Hamm: Sound cues, and singing, Cynthia was singing throughout the whole thing. And there are so many moving parts, it’s like conducting an orchestra in many ways, or being in a play.

To be clear about this, it’s not just a play in the sense that they had to memorize pages and pages of dialogue, but when you have big lighting and musical cues in place, it really does start to feel like a large production of sorts you’d expect in the local theater.

But how will these scenes actually play out? Given writer-director Drew Goddard’s history. I’m expecting great things…but what about you? Let us know down below!
