How Jared Leto’s Strange, Inappropriate Gifts Unified the ‘SUICIDE SQUAD’

DC and WB’s upcoming film SUICIDE SQUAD certainly contains a strange bunch of characters. From the scaly Killer Croc to the fiery El Diablo, it’s not the kind of group you’d like to cross when heading down an alley. Another huge character that’ll be making a splash in his DCEU debut is the Joker, who will be portrayed by Oscar-winning actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto.

The Joker has already been interpreted on screen before a handful of times. Caesar Romero’s Joker in the 1960s BATMAN series was a total prankster, while Heath Ledger’s most recent take on the Clown Prince of Crime in THE DARK KNIGHT was a full-on terrorist. But what about Leto? Based on what we’ve seen, he seems to be somewhere in-between the two. The man is no less terrifying than what Heath Ledger brought to the table, but he also seems to have a prankster edge to him.

This is evident in the gifts that Leto gave to his co-stars while in character.

In an interview with E!, Leto revealed that not only did he send a live rat to Margot Robbie, but he sent other gifts, such as used condoms and anal beads to other members of the Suicide Squad.

“I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise, a spontaneity and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.”

One of the biggest hurdles actors do have to overcome while on set is not being afraid to go to strange places. So as weird as this whole gift-giving thing from Leto seems, it seems to have done its job in getting his fellow cast-members into character.

“I got a number of gifts from Jared,” co-star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who plays Killer Croc in the film, told E!

“Some of which I don’t like to talk about. Yeah, he sent used condoms and sticky Playboy magazines. I mean, it just wasn’t right. If you’re going to have that kind of party at least invite the Croc. Don’t send me your dirty leftovers. You see why he ain’t a part of the Squad, right? That’s just downright selfish.

And the dead pig. But that was a good gift. You know why? Because it had the effect of unifying us as a group, because then it became us against him. And we sent the messenger back with the dead pig with our own personalized message. So it really got the ball rolling.”

Will Smith, who plays Deadshot in the film, had the following to say about Leto going full Joker, even while the cameras weren’t rolling.

“You say Jared has gone full Joker. He went full Joker. And the rule generally is never go full Joker, but he really set the tone. He wasn’t playing with it. He was dead serious. As an actor he was going in, and he was 100 percent going into this character. And he really jarred the rest of us into, ‘okay, okay, he’s not fooling around, so we need to get it right.'”

Let’s hope this all pays of on screen. If the most recent trailer is any indication, then it certainly has!
