I, Tonya Trailer: Margot Robbie Is The Controversial Figure Skating Icon In This Dark Comedy

NEON has just released the trailer for the upcoming dark comedy film, I, Tonya. I, Tonya tells the story of the controversial figure skater Tonya Harding. Back in 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man named Jeff Gilloly. The man clubbed her right knee, hoping to take her out as the competition.

It turns out that the assault was planned by figure skating rival Tonya Harding (Gilloly’s ex-wife), who was determined to win at the Winter Olympics at all costs. Well, it cost her a lot, as she was barred from competition for the rest of her life following the attack.

Starring in this new film is Margot Robbie as the titular Tonya Harding, and the approach they seem to be taking is pretty interesting. Rather than go straight biopic here, it really seems to be amping up her evil nature in a performance that doesn’t seem unlike what Melissa Rauch did for The Bronze a couple years back.

According to Deadline, the film has been making the festival circuits, and has been quite a favorite, with Robbie receiving a Gotham award for her performance.
