Brad Bird is one of those filmmakers who doesn’t seem to like to sit still in one space for too long. After swooping into Pixar for films like The Incredibles and Ratatouille, he could have spent a healthy career developing projects solely for them. Yet, in spite of his animation background, he seemed determined to do more, turning around doing things like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Tomorrowland.
Last year, he returned to the world of animation in Incredibles 2, but if you thought he’d be setting up base in the medium once again, you’d be wrong. Speaking with Variety at the BAFTA Tea Party, Bird gave us the first details of his next project, which he seemed eager to talk about:
“Well it’s a musical, actually. I don’t know anything about musicals so I figured I should do this, because I’m deathly afraid of it and that sounds like a cool thing. It’s a project I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, it’s got about 20 minutes of animation in it. It’s an original project.”

One can never say that Bird is a filmmaker that doesn’t reach for the stars. Even with his one flop, Tomorrowland, you had one story there that was incredibly ambitious. It’s very clear that the man likes to tackle projects that put him cleanly outside of his comfort zone, and this musical looks to be no different. I do love the fact that he is going to incorporate some animation in some way, even if it is a mostly live-action project.
But, seeing that it is a musical, one can’t help but wonder who is doing the music. When asked, Bird confirmed that Hollywood film composer Michael Giacchino would be working on the project with him. While I’m not exactly insane for the musical genre myself, this is definitely something that piques my interest, as are most Brad Bird projects.
