With production for Avengers: Infinity War set to begin shortly in Atlanta, all of our favorite Marvel heroes are assembling for what’s destined to be the biggest superhero film of all time. Even with what little we know about the specifics of the film’s plot, we know that this thing is going to be massive in scale. It kind of has to be. But according to the film’s official casting call that’s gone out, one of Marvel’s biggest and brightest heroes may be sitting this one out:

Say what?

Yes, you read that correctly. Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker, is not listed as a member of the cast for Avengers: Infinity War, even though half the world is. The list is clearly not scared of spoilers because it includes Brie Larson, whose Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, we haven’t even met yet. The list includes practically every other major character we’ve met through Marvel’s previous Phases, and so that makes the exclusion of one friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man all the more glaring.

Let’s not forget that while Spidey may be “new” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character is still seen by many as one of its biggest and most popular heroes. Him not being a part of Avengers: Infinity War is pretty stunning when you think about it. When he joined in on the fun for Captain America: Civil War, it felt like Marvel Studios had finally drafted a franchise quarterback after years of making the most out of lesser players.

This likely all has to do with the fact that Spider-Man is still, technically, a Sony film property. And there’s always the possibility that they’ll explain, in a storyline sense, why he can’t participate in Avengers: Infinity War. From what we’ve seen of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is pretty protective of Peter, and so maybe they’ll set something up in that film where the characters gets benched.

We also know that this next Avengers film is, essentially, going to be a two-parter. So it’s possible that Spidey will only sit out the first part.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But the fact remains that, as of now, there will be no Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War.

According to Movie Casting Call, here’s who will appear in the film:

“Starring in “Avengers: Infinity War” is BAFTA Award nominee Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin as Thanos, Saturn Award Winner Chris Pratt as Star Lord / Peter Quill, Teen Choice Awards nominee Sebastian Stan as Bucky, four-time Golden Globe Award nominee Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Academy Award winner Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, ALMA Award winner Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Empire Award winner Karen Gillan as Nebula, two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye, two-time Saturn Award nominee Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America, BAFTA Awards nominee Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet, four-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Vin Diesel as Groot, Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man, British Independent Film Awards nominee Benedict Wong as Wong, Action on Film Award winner Dave Bautista as Drax, BAFTA Film Award nominee Paul Bettany as Vision, Santa Barbara International Film Festival Virtuoso Award winner Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther, three-time Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / The Hulk, and two-time Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man.”
