Is Noah Hawley’s Doctor Doom Movie Still On the Table Following The Disney/Fox Takeover?

Doctor Doom is one of my favorite characters from the Marvel comic universe and for me, its greatest and most complex villain. It’s hard to argue that Doom was an influence for other villains like Darth Vader that came later and yet so far, the character has been misused by Fox in all of the movies that have featured Doom in my opinion.

Of course, come March 20, (that’s a week today), we expect that Doctor Doom will become a Disney property along with all of Fox’s other Marvel IP’s. So does that signal the death knell for the Doctor Doom movie that Noah Hawley was developing for Fox?

Well, the answer is probably yes, but who knows for sure? What does seem to be clear is that Noah Hawley is still working in the script for the movie and has not yet been told to shelve this project. Is it possible that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige may consider using this screenplay for the Doctor Doom movie, but set in the MCU? Hawley recently spoke to THR at SXSW and I found his comments interesting. Hawley says he met with Kevin Feige and was asked of the script,

“Are you still working on it?”

To which Hawley replied:

“Should I still be working on it?”

Whilst Hawley made no indication of what happened next, it does suggest that Feige might have an eye on what Hawley is dreaming up. So it’s theoretically still possible that Feige could use the basic story Hawley comes up with to introduce Marvel’s top drawer villain into the MCU. We know that Disney plans to keep releasing movies under the Fox banner after the takeover is complete, but I would guess Feige is smart enough to realize that Doom is one of THE prize assets he will get back under this new regime. Frankly, if they didn’t use Doom in the MCU it would be quite the tragedy in this fans opinion.

Hawley also gave some details about where his script may be going, he said he envisions Doctor Doom as a geopolitical thriller more than a standard superhero movie. It begins with Doom putting a dome over Latveria, the fictional European country he rules. He later invites a female journalist to be his voice, meaning the protagonist would be someone without superpowers.

Now I do find this interesting, however, I also feel that some work would be needed to make this fit with the MCU. The basic concept is fine, but I kinda feel like that reporter will discover Doom isn’t so altruistic and may need to get help from outside, surely that’s where you’d think of bringing in someone that could physically contend with Doom on a short term basis. What happens after that in regards to how Doom changes the fate of the MCU, well, that’s something I am sure the people at Marvel are already musing over?

What do you think of Hawley’s comments, would you like to see this idea adapted into something that could work within the MCU, or do you feel Marvel should shelve the project and start from scratch with Doctor Doom? Share your thoughts in the usual place below as always.
