J.J. Abrams Wants To Fix Something And Rey’s Lightsaber May Be Red | The Cantina

Welcome to The Cantina where we definitely serve your kind. I’m your bartender Kyle Malone and I’m serving up tall glasses of nothing but Star Wars.  By now you know I am the dedicated, well versed in the EU, experienced gamer, and open-minded fan this world needs. I see the flaws in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but also the great moments too. I know the importance of The Empire Strikes Back but see how strong Return of the Jedi is. I see that the prequels… well… we’ll get there… maybe. There’s nothing more satisfying than a great Star Wars story, and I want more!  I’m feeling generous so a round of  Fizzbrews are on the house.

Recent News

Luke, Luke, Luke, Luke, Luke… If the rumors are true, it seems that Episode IX will have a lot to do with Luke Skywalker. Will he be a Force Ghost, are there flashbacks, does he come back to life? Well this week’s rumors don’t deal with him… much. First up is a reportedly leaked scene dealing with Luke, Rey, and a red crystal. A source told Express:

“A description of Luke Skywalker and Rey on a jungle world. In front of Rey, Luke has his hand raised with a kyber  crystal floating above the palm of his hand. The crystal is red like the one seen in The Last Jedi however it could be a different one. Though the one in the Last Jedi was a fragment, this is a full red kyber crystal. Rey is meditating on a rock as the red kyber crystal floats towards her and then falls into the palm of her hand. This could be Luke’s final lesson of constructing a lightsaber of her own.”

OH MY MAKER!!! REY IS A SITH!!! Okay, probably not. However, I had thought her going dark in Episode VII would have been a very cool twist. With the destruction of Anakin’s lightsaber in The Last Jedi and Luke owing Rey a third lesson, it’s not hard to see that lightsaber construction could be said lesson. But what about the red crystal? Well, in the Expanded Universe, before the dark days of the Prequel Trilogy, the colors of lightsaber blades didn’t really mean anything. Leia herself had a red one, Jaina Solo’s was purple, and Corran horn had a silver one. The EU eventually followed suit with what George Lucas set up in the PT… Red bad! Green and blue good! Thanks to this, many people believe that red crystals are inherently sith.

So why would Rey build a lightsaber with one? Well it may be the only one available. The one in Anakin’s lightsaber could be damaged. She wants to make a unique weapon and will use both Anakin’s crystal and the available red one. Any of these are possible reasons for this scene, and none of them are bad ideas in my mind. In the EU some jedi used multiple crystals so they could change the length of their blades by twisting another crystal into line with the energy emitting from the power cell. Personally, I would like to get back to Force users being able to use any color crystal they want. And let’s get some new colors too!

Next up is a rumor that directly goes against my hopes for this next movie. It seems that J.J. Abrams may be “fixing” an issue fans have from The Last Jedi, Rey’s lineage. Here’s the problem though, there’s not really something to fix. People keep accusing Kylo of telling Rey her parents are nobodies. In reality it was Rey who said those words, Kylo just agreed with her. From the moment that happened the fan base erupted and I don’t know why. I never wanted her to be someone special or even born of the Force. At the very most I would have accepted her being a Kenobi. However, Kylo could have been lying. He could have been playing on her emotions. Here’s what the leak says:

“Apparently part of those rewrites was changing the character of Rey and giving her a very important lineage – an idea which JJ Abrams originally had while filming The Force Awakens. Now that he is back for Episode 9, some of the changes to the script involved changing Rey’s lineage and how it will be of significance.”

Now, if this is the only “fix” they do, it’ll be fine. As I mentioned above, it may not really be a fix but actually part of a grander arch. However with all of the other rumors about Luke, Snoke, and even Palpatine I am worried we will get an incomplete movie that busies itself with changing what happened in Episode IX. Check out why I think that’s a bad idea here.

Last Call

Today is Thanksgiving here in the United States and I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for reading this column and being fans of the site in general. I joined the site back in August and it has been one hell of a ride ever since. Star Wars is one of those things that has been in my life for as long as I can remember. It has also helped me make several life long friends. The fanbase is dedicated and loyal to a fault.

I will be watching Star Wars: A New Hope today in celebration of starting my 3rd month writing The CantinaIt’s not like I need a reason to watch such a great movie. Thank you all, and May The Force Be With You.
