The 25th James Bond film, currently due out in November 2019 and to be directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours), will feature Daniel Craig once again in the lead role of MI6’s best blunt instrument/super-spy. Supposedly, this will be Craig’s last outing as Bond, but he’s currently vying for the longest “I swear I’m leaving!” record with Michael Bay’s relinquishing of the Transformers’ director’s chair. Whether Craig does indeed hang up the PPK will remain to be seen, but that hasn’t stopped fans from voicing who they’d like next to don the tuxedo and bravado.
According to a survey of 1000 UK individuals administered by ODEON, and results published by Express, 26% of fans would like to see Idris Elba (Luther, Beasts of No Nation, Thor Ragnarok) as the next James Bond. Following him were Tom Hardy (Mad Max Fury Road) at 22%, Tom Hiddleston (also Thor Ragnarok) at 11%, Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) at 5%, and finally James Norton (Happy Valley) at 5%.

Rumors were recently swirling that Elba had taken a meeting with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently about Bond 26, but that’s been mostly debunked at this point. It’s a nice gesture that fans are open to diversity in the James Bond role, but it should be noted that while Elba received the majority of the vote, 74% of the population opted for another white male—a pairing of demographic characteristics this role absolutely no longer needs. That’s not to say that the other actors on the fan shortlist are incapable of playing Bond well, but there’s nothing inherent to the character’s nature that weds its portrayal to be a Caucasian man. This is a prime opportunity to take an iconic figure in literature and cinema and add some diversity. Bond is bigger than skin color and gender, as the character’s traits matter more than appearance.
It’s far, far too early for any passing of the Bond mantle to occur, and if the 25th entry explodes at the global box office, expect Broccoli to try to woo Craig back again. That is, of course, unless they kill off his iteration of the character…
