James Cameron Reacts to Early Alita: Battle Angel Review

It’s been an interesting ride for Alita: Battle Angel and that’s only counting the time it has been in production. This is a passion project that, for Producer James Cameron, goes back nearly twenty years.

After amassing an all-star cast and production team, anticipation for the film built and when the first trailer hit, the biggest comments weren’t about the stunning visuals or tech that went into the project. The overriding narrative was how potential moviegoers weren’t into the main character’s “large anime eyes.”

The next couple of weeks may be just as interesting for Cameron, as we began hearing this weekend that early reviews for Alita: Battle Angel were mixed. Fortunately for the acclaimed producer, there was a ray of sunshine from Anime News Network editor Zac Bertschy — a sunshine Cameron was more than happy to react to.

As of this writing, Alita: Battle Angel sits at 60% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. At the end of the day, while critical reception is important, ultimately, how viewers receive the film will determine if the production has legs and whether or not we’ll get the tubular sequels Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez have cooking up.

The Robert Rodriguez directed film boasts an impressive cast to include Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelley, Christoph Waltz, and Ed Skrein.  Alita: Battle Angel releases to general audiences on 14 February 2019.
