For a lot of mainstream film audiences, James Gunn seemed to come out of the blue. Yes, he had already directed such cult favorites as SUPER and SLITHER, but in the world of blockbuster filmmaking, he was an unknown entity. Furthermore, he was given control of some obscure Marvel franchise called GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. That Marvel would even try and make a property like that into a huge film was crazy, and that they’d trust an unknown like Gunn seemed even crazier.

But here we are, a few years later, and now we are less than a year from the release of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, a sequel that may very well be one of Marvel’s most anticipated films in the next couple years. With the first film, Gunn established himself as a unique voice in comic book movie fandom, and we can hardly imagine him calling any place other than Marvel home.

Well, interestingly enough, it sounds like Gunn could have just as easily ended up working over at WB on a DC film, as was revealed by Gunn himself during a Facebook Q & A. When asked about DC films, Gunn wrote the following:

“I thought there was some amazing action sequences in MAN OF STEEL, but I haven’t seen the other two films. I’ve had opportunities to make DC films, but I haven’t said yes to anything, and not sure I would at this time. I’ve talked before about which projects appeal to me the most IF I was into making one, and it’s always SHAZAM and METAL MEN and SWAMP THING and [JONAH] HEX and a few other DC IPs I’ve enjoyed for a great deal of my life.”

Of course, leave it to Gunn to want to tackle the weirder projects out there. Of the IPs he named, the only one going through development is SHAZAM!, which currently has the Rock attached. Even without Gunn, that is a film that’s being handled much differently than other DC properties, as it’s being co-produced by a subsidiary of Warner Bros., rather than Warner Bros. proper.

I suppose Marvel should count themselves lucky that they locked down that talent when they did, but they’re such a well-oiled machine at this point, it’s not crazy to imagine they would’ve found another great talent to bring their stories to life.

What do you think of news that James Gunn could’ve gone over to DC? Would you have preferred to see what he could do over in that world, or do you like seeing him flex his creative muscles over at Marvel Studios? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
