Joker Becomes The Highest Grossing Rated R Film Ever… Duh!

I have no problem admitting when I get box office predictions wrong. I thought Captain Marvel would barely touch $800 million worldwide due to not having many “firsts” to its name after Wonder Woman hit the year before. It went on to make over $1 billion. I, like others, thought Joker would top out with around $250 million domestically and another $300 million from the rest of the world. Instead, the film is pushing $280 million here at home and more than $570 million abroad. This weekend the film became the highest-grossing rated-R film of all time worldwide. It’s estimated total for the end of this weekend is $849 million and puts it nearly $50 million above Deadpool.

A lot of factors went into this movie’s performance. First, a strong word of mouth despite average reviews on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Secondly, not a lot of strong competition. As a matter of fact, this weekend the film returned to the top spot for the weekend box office. Thirdly, pure curiosity. Curiosity as to why so many media outlets tried to push the idea this film was dangerous. Seriously, some outlets covered the fact two guys got kicked out of a screening for smoking and making noise. THAT WOULD HAPPEN AT ANY MOVIE!!!

Anyways, the film has done well and could find itself north of $300 million domestically and over $600 million from overseas. I don’t think this is a $1 billion film, but a rerelease in a month or two could help push it over that edge.

How many times have you seen Joker? Do you think it’ll break $1 billion? Let us know in the comments below!
