Joker: Joaquin Phoenix Doesn’t Care What You (Yes, YOU) Think Of His Joker

Actor Joaquin Phoenix doesn’t really care what you think. I’m sure I’m not breaking any hearts by saying that. If his performance on the David Letterman show all those years back, then perhaps nothing will. He’s very much an actor’s actor who likes to get fully enveloped in whatever project he’s doing, and the same goes for his upcoming stint as the Joker in the Todd Phillips-directed standalone film, which will go in front of cameras very soon.

Though while Phoenix has made a career playing original one-off characters, this will be his first time playing something as iconic as the Joker. With that in mind, there has to be some level of trepidation, right? Even for someone who cares as little as him. If you thought that, you’d be wrong. But don’t let me crush your dreams. He said as much in his own words when asked about playing the character by Indiewire:

“I could care less. I don’t really think that much about what people think. Who cares, who cares? My approach to every movie is the same. What I’m interested in is the filmmaker and the idea of the character.”

I can respect that, for sure. At the end of the day, the Joker has had countless interpretations, with every single one being vastly different than the one before it. Why not let the artsier method actor have his way, even if he has little regard for the fandom surrounding it. At worst, we’ll end up with a dud of a character that will have no impact on any other film going forward.
