Joker: Kevin Smith Thinks Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Will Negate Potential Jared Leto Film

Warner Bros. — and specifically DC Films — seems to be at odds with itself. By and large, the studio had a reputation for its director-focused approach to things, but that all seemed to change with the DC Extended Universe, which featured heavy influence from the suits up top. The result was a hodgepodge of films that didn’t do much for a lot of fans. One such film was Suicide Squad, which starred Jared Leto as the Joker.

It’s been a couple years since that movie hit theaters, and now we have a completely separate Joker film coming from Todd Phillips with Joaquin Phoenix starring as the Clown Prince of Crime. This film is set outside the DC Extended Universe and is a wholly standalone experience, and while it is off on its little island, some are speculating its impact can reverberate in the DCEU. One such noteworthy fan is podcaster and filmmaker Kevin Smith, who sang the praises of Phoenix:

“He’s a great actor. I’ll watch him do anything. Seeing him take on this role, I’ve been curious from the jump. But I’m also of the belief that you could make a bunch of these. You could make six Joker movies, I’ll see all of them. Half of them will probably be really good. So, you know, they’re not planning that, but they were talking about making this one and the Jared Leto one. It feels like the Jared Leto one quietly goes away, based on this one.”

So what does he mean? Well, of the roughly 3,600 rumored films in development, one was a film supposedly centered on Jared Leto’s Joker, with Leto serving as an executive producer. This film could also pave the way for future Suicide Squad-related films.

Smith seems to be of the opinion that this would ultimately result in Leto’s film slowly being pushed away. Given the sheer number of movies in development, that’s not out of the question, and it would make sense if the studio didn’t want to rehash two iterations of a character within a couple years.

But what do you think? Do you think Leto’s Joker film stands a chance of coming out? Let us know down below!
