Jordan Peele Producing The Re-Imagination of The Horror Classic Candyman

Last month Michael Myers made his return to theaters in Halloween. Next year a Child’s Play will be getting a reboot with a new version of the killer doll named Buddi. Now another classic horror film is looking to get a what is being described as a “spiritual sequel”.

According to Dark Horizons MGM is set to partner with Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions on bringing back the 1992 horror film, Candyman. The film will be directed by Nia DaCosta for a screenplay written by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. They will be returning to the section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing project was, but now that section has been gentrified.

The original Candyman film was adapted from Clive Baker’s short story The Forbidden and starred Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. It followed a graduate student that was completing a thesis on urban legends and ends up encountering Candyman. He was an artist and a son of a slave who was brutally murdered. He has a hook for a and as well as the ability to control bees. He appears anytime his name is said five times in a mirror and kills the person that says it.

Peele commented about the impact that film had on him saying that, “The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

The film is looking to start production next spring, with a scheduled release date of June 12th, 2020 though Universal Pictures.
